Infant safety 1st car seat

I'm looking for opinions on car seats. I have it narrowed down to either the Graco MyRide 65, or the Safety 1st Safety 1st 3 Phase, but am having issues finding reviews for the Safety 1st.

I am looking into getting a new car seat for my 8 Month old son. I was looking into the Britax Boulevard, which is $300 +. Now that is really expensive and not sure I am able to buy that. My sister told me about the Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite Convetible

I am a single Father with a little girl. I drive a Mazda3 that does poorly on rear side impact crash tests. Poorly, according to the United States National Traffic for Highway Safety (NTHS). However, in my model statistics improve with rear seat airbags.

On the base that goes with my daughters car seat there is a handle that says pull to adjust base. I pulled it but it just went back in. Do I need to have the car seat in the base for it to work or what do I do? I'm not sure where the owners manual is.

Nearly one year ago,  a concerned father, Bryan Dussault of Chicago, posted a video on YouTube showing the failure of straps on his child’s Dorel car seat to fasten securely. The date of manufacture can be found on the side of the seat itself. The manufacturer is now recalling 145 different model numbers of Cosco, Maxi-Cosi, and Safety 1st child restraints. Models include the convertible child restraints Alpha Omega, Alpha Omega Elite, Enspira, Priori, Prospect, and Vantage. The dates of the defective child restraints are those manufactured from May 1, 2008 through April 30, 2009....
